Basics
Coaching is a form of consulting. Like a consultant, a coach helps you solve problems, reach goals, design a plan of action, and make decisions that bring out your best.

Coaching is a creative process in which there is one goal -- your personal growth. You and your coach become partners. This partnership is unique in that it allows you to be fully heard, supported, and encouraged. Most importantly, it helps to separate who you are from the roles you play.

Coaching and traditional "therapy" differ in several ways. For example:

  • Therapists typically help clients resolve old pain and develop coping strategies. Coaches, on the other hand, work with those who are designing their future.

  • Therapists don’t usually share personal information with their clients. However, in the coaching relationship, both the coach and client share information while the coach is guiding the client toward understanding and growth. This creates a sense of equal partnership.

Benefits
Almost anyone can benefit from coaching, that is, if you are ready and willing to make changes in your life.

Coaching can help you:

  • Build a more fulfilled life
  • Fulfill a lifelong dream
  • Create balance in your life
  • Simplify your life
  • Determine what really matters to you
  • Get help with being more organized and focused
  • Reduce stress
  • Realize your full potential

Example
"T," a flight attendant with a major airline, was very frustrated with her position. One of "T's" top values was order. She defined order as having a set daily schedule. As a relatively new flight attendant, she rarely knew what her work schedule would be. Even though she loved her job and its benefits, she wasn't really happy.

After we determined what was really important to her, it was evident that her position did not honor her values. She is now discovering and defining the elements that make up her perfect job. This will allow her to make choices that are more in line with who she is.

Here is what "T" has to say about the experience:

"Coaching gave me more answers than I had actually anticipated. I had become extremely frustrated with my career as a flight attendant, and while fully anticipating only finding a new career for me, I began to learn more and more about my inner self. I found myself learning more about my personal values and began applying them to all different areas of my life."
